Q: I have heard you should start anti-malarial medication 4-6 weeks before traveling in a malaria region, but I'm not going to get started until two weeks prior... at this point, is it worth taking? [I'm not actually going to a malaria-prone region, but all of Haiti is considered a malaria risk.]

A: Each anti-malarial drug is different for when you start it. I can't remember ever taking one 4-6 weeks ahead. It seems to me that for Chloroquine the most we took it in advance was one week. We generally go ahead and take the pills if we're going to an area with malaria risk.
