Q: If you drive into Canada will you be asked for a passport?
A: Not yet. The US is going to start requiring either a passport or passport card (a cheaper id only good for driving into the US from Canada or Mexico) in summer 2009. Once the US requires the passport to return to the US, Canadians customs will also ask for it when you enter Canada, since they don't want you to get stuck there! For now, you can drive across with birth certificates and state issued id or drivers licenses. You do need a passport to enter by air or sea. The US keeps postponing when they are going to require a passport to drive in from Canada, and they might well delay again.
