Q: When I moved into this house I didn't have much at all but now we have a family and it seems like we have accumulated more stuff because of it. My husband works very long hours so I will be the one doing most of the packing. I need tips on how to stay really organized when moving also things like what do I move first and what should be moved last. How long does it take to normally move? Any tips that might not be so obvious would be great too. Thank you so much. : ) most of the "stuff" is boxes and boxes of baby clothes and other baby stuff like walkers, playpins, cribs, blankets, bibs..the list goes on. We arent done having kids so unfortunatly all of this stuff has to come with us.

A: I had a small, i.e. about a 6"x5" spring binder, that ultimately became my moving notepad. I started out using it for lists of utilities, subscriptions, credit / banking -- all those things I would have to disconnect/connect or send change of address notifications. It turned out to be really useful when I had to make (and track) multiple calls to Verizon, both for disconnects and reconnects. So, everything I had to record ultimately ended up in this notepad (which I still have). I've also amassed loads of stuff. For this move, in notepad, I set up a separate page for each room in the new place I was moving to: i.e. Master Bedroom, Bedroom 2, Living Room, etc. As I packed stuff, I made a very *general* list of items going into that box (which would also serve as a tickler that similarly-placed items would also be in that box), so that a typical page could look like: Living Room: Box 1 (med. box) -- art books, videos, console displays Box 2 (lamp box) -- red lamp base Box 3 (shade box) -- lamp shades for red lamps; crystal lamp Bedroom 2: Box 1 (large box) -- extra bedding and pillows Box 2 (med box) / closet -- asst. scarves, accessories, belts The boxes would be marked to match the lists (Bedroom #2, #1, etc). When I arrived at new place, I knew precisely which box to open when I wanted to put my hands on most frequently used pots/pans, etc. I also didn't have lots of time to cull and pack since I was working long hours so I began month ahead of time. Pitched stuff as I went along. The last box I packed is fairly obvious, and this box went in the car with me instead of the moving van: everything I would need to spend the first night (and first next new day) in my new place: bedding, towels and personal care supplies, jammies and slippers, the shower curtain and bath mat, snacks, tea kettle and tea bags, etc. Obviously I still have too much stuff; some boxes are still packed and in storage. But I still have my moving notebook and I've referred to it since the move to put my hands precisely on what I need to retrieve. I still hate moving, so you have my sympathy. You have a much larger load to bear taking care of kids and packing too. Good luck.
